Hugh the Drover CD cover

RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
HUGH THE DROVER
A Celebration of the 1924 Recording

Hugh the Drover, Vaughan Williams’s first full-length opera, was completed before the First World War, but not performed until 1924. A premiere at the Royal College of Music on 4 July 1924 was followed on 14 July by the first professional production at His Majesty’s Theatre in London. This was the beginning of the first of several nationwide tours by the British National Opera Company (BNOC), and the opera quickly became popular.

Tudor Davies and Mary Lewis, played Hugh and Mary, while the supporting cast included Constance Willis, Frederick Collier and Peter Dawson.

An Exploration of the Sixteen Singers chosen for the first performance. Includes the recording conducted by Sir Henry Wood

With a jubilee concert marking Sir Henry Wood’s 50 years as a professional conductor being planned in late 1937, Wood’s draft programme included a ‘Vocal Concerted Piece’ for four each of sopranos, contraltos, tenors, and basses. This CD explores each of the chosen sixteen singers through their other recordings.

Front row (left to right): Isobel Baillie, Elsie Suddaby, Eva Turner, Stiles-Allen, Sir Henry Wood, Margaret Balfour, Astra Desmond, Muriel Brunskill, Mary Jarred.

The CD cover shows Sir Henry Wood who conducted the first performance and the sixteen singers who partcipated at the Royal Albert Hall.

….I found this disc absorbing and often most moving. Several of these pieces brought a tear to my eye (Elgar, Parry and Kennedy-Fraser). There is a magic in these tracks that defies time, stylistic parameters and logic.
